Upper Skeena Recreation Centre // The current arena in the Hazeltons is old, outdated, and is suffering from severe structural problems. The ice arena has been a critical part of the community for generations, in the past hosting countless hockey practices, games and tournaments. In addition to hockey, the arena was the heart of the community and hosted many community functions such as graduations, community dances, and weddings.
The SIAA has been working for years to raise funds to build a new arena. Until recently, the project has been slow. Local organizations and governments have provided some seed funding and support. The grassroots Hockeyville campaign garnered thousands of stories and photos about the old arena. Project managers were recently hired who have experience with capital fundraising and building projects, and the new arena is moving forward.

Here is an interesting article I have found at NationTalk.ca on the above subject as it supports the rationale for the proposed Upper Skeena Arena: http://www.nationtalk.ca/modules/news/article.php?storyid=40301
BC People, a unique storytelling project showcasing multiculturalism in British Columbia, is now online. Created to raise awareness and understanding about cultural diversity, BC People features 50 real people who live in all reaches of the province. New and long-term immigrants, Aboriginal peoples and pioneers – people from all walks of life and every region of B.C. – share their personal stories and insights related to multiculturalism. The result is a series of portraits at once heart warming and thought provoking, entertaining and informative.
The winner of two tickets to Sarah McLachlan, one night at the Treasure Cove Hotel, and $100 cash for gas, is Camille Derrick of Hazelton.
